The People’s Emergency Briefing (Film & Discussion)

Wed 30th September – doors at 6pm, film starts at 6.30pm. 50-minute run time with subtitles in English, followed by a community discussion.

What’s happening with climate and nature, and what does it mean for everyday life in the UK? Join us for a screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing - an eye-opening 50-minute film bringing together nine leading UK scientists and experts with the latest evidence and why it matters for things like extreme weather, food security, health & cost of living. The film is based on the National Emergency Briefing in Westminster (featured by ITV, Channel 4 and The Times) with appearances from Chris Packham, Deborah Meaden, and a range of voices from across the UK. After the film, there will be an open discussion facilitated by Ben Thomas (green workshop leader at The Hive) about what it means for our community and what we can do locally. Bring a friend, neighbour or family member: everyone is welcome.

Income from tickets allows us as a charity to show this film to our community, with a discount for young people (16+) to ensure they feel welcome to be part of this discussion. The fee also helps us protect against no-shows, allowing as many people to take part as possible. The screening is subsidised by our ‘Wild Hive – The Nurture Garden’ project, which has been supported by Nature Hubs, Veolia and The Finnis Scott Foundation. The film was developed for an adult audience. Despite receiving a 12A rating from the BBFC, the Climate Psychology Alliance strongly suggests that public screenings should not be open to children under 16, and that special consideration is given to the impact and potential support needs of older teenagers and young adults attending the film. Whilst young people will live more of their lives impacted by the effects of climate and ecological breakdown, they commonly encounter messages that their generation will ‘fix’ the crisis; messages that risk unfair feelings of responsibility. This often unwittingly arises when adults talk about it. Whilst the film features different people discussing their reactions to the film’s content, children’s views and experiences are not considered. The filmmakers note that it is essential that children and young people are educated on the impacts of climate and ecological collapse. However, this needs to be done in age-appropriate ways that are genuinely empowering, sensitive to children' s developmental needs, and that provide space for children’s thoughts and feelings to be heard and validated.
